Can you put a sticker on a German bank card? Sparkasse, girocard and credit cards

The short answer: we know of no Visa or Mastercard rule against cardholders putting stickers on their own cards, and the German card terms we read for this page say nothing about stickers either. What does matter: the card remains the bank's property, the chip has to stay uncovered, and the sticker should come off again without a trace.

This is our honest reading, not legal advice.

Can I put a sticker on my German bank card?

We found no rule against it. Many banks' terms do say that the card remains the bank's property and that you have to hand it back when the bank asks. That is why a removable sticker that leaves the card unchanged is the sensible way to personalise it. Paint or engraving does not belong on a card you do not own.

What Sparkasse's terms say

The Sparkasse debit card terms (Bedingungen für die Sparkassen-Card, version February 2026) say in section A II no. 5 that the physical debit card remains the property of the Sparkasse. We read the version published by Sparkasse Oder-Spree, a standard form from the Sparkasse group. Your own Sparkasse's version is the one that applies to you.

Credit cards work the same way. The Mastercard/Visa credit card terms of a Sparkasse (version March 2026) state in no. 16 that the credit card remains the property of the Sparkasse. Neither document mentions stickers.

girocard from other banks

As an example from a private bank, we read the girocard terms of MLP Banking AG, a Bank-Verlag form (45.401, 05/23). Section II no. 5 says the card remains the property of the bank. Again, nothing about stickers. Your bank's wording may differ, so if you want to be sure, check the card terms in your online banking or on your bank's website.

EC card, girocard, debit card? Many people in Germany still say EC-Karte, meaning the girocard that comes with a current account. At Sparkasse it is called the Sparkassen-Card. The sticker fits every standard-size credit and debit card, whichever bank issued it.

Do chip, contactless and ATMs still work?

Yes, as long as the sticker sits right. The chip never gets covered, because the sticker has a cut-out chip window.

  • Chip: stays uncovered, so inserting the card into a terminal works as before.
  • Contactless (NFC): the antenna is inside the card. Thin printed vinyl does not block it. Metal foil would, so never put a foil sticker on a bank card.
  • ATMs: keep working. Make sure every edge lies flat, and if a corner lifts, press it back down before you put the card into a slot.
  • Apple Pay and Google Pay: keep working as usual.

Have a metal or transparent card? We cannot make a general promise for those, so check your card yourself or ask us before you order.

What if the bank or a cashier asks about it?

The Sparkasse debit card terms (A II no. 6) list three reasons the Sparkasse may block or retain a card, for example at an ATM: if it is entitled to terminate the card contract for good cause, if objective reasons relating to the card's security justify it, or if unauthorised or fraudulent use is suspected. The credit card terms (no. 14) and the private bank girocard form (II no. 6) are worded almost the same. A sticker is not mentioned anywhere.

If your bank or a cashier still asks to see the card without the sticker, peel it off. It comes away without residue and without damaging the card. A few more things worth knowing:

  • Signature: the terms ask you to sign the signature strip if your card has one. That is on the back, which the sticker never touches, just like the magnetic stripe.
  • The front: the sticker covers everything printed on the front. If your card number is on the front, think about where you will look it up for online shopping.
  • PIN: the terms say your PIN must not be noted on the card. That goes for your design too: no PIN, not even hidden in a picture.
  • Replacement cards: when you get a new card or close the account, the bank can ask for the old card back. Peel the sticker off first.

Sparkasse Picture-Card or a sticker?

Some Sparkassen offer their own picture card, the Picture-Card. At Sparkasse KölnBonn, for example, you pick an image from a gallery or upload your own photo. According to its website (September 2026), it is offered there for the Mastercard Classic and Gold, a new card with a picture costs EUR 7.50 on top of the annual card fee, and changing the picture costs EUR 12. Other Sparkassen may offer different cards and prices, so ask yours.

Design Gallery image or your own photo, printed on the card Your own photo on matte vinyl
Changing the design EUR 12 Peel it off, apply a new one

Our honest take: if your Sparkasse offers the Picture-Card for the exact card you use and you want to keep the picture for years, it is a good option. A sticker suits you better if your card is not included, if you like to change your design, or if you have cards from more than one bank.

How to apply the sticker

  1. Clean the cardWipe the front clean and dry. Dust under the sticker is what causes bubbles.
  2. Peel off the backingHold the sticker by its edges.
  3. Line up the chip windowPlace the window exactly over the chip, then lower the sticker onto the card.
  4. Press from the middle outOn a card with raised numbers, press twice over the numbers. See a bubble? Lift that corner and lay it down again.

It takes about 30 seconds. With the Application Kit, your card clicks into an alignment tray so the sticker lands straight first time. If your card has a notch, apply the sticker as usual and trim that spot with scissors afterwards. More in How it works and Is a card sticker safe?

Frequently asked questions

Is a sticker on a Sparkassen-Card against the rules?

We found no such rule in the Sparkassen-Card terms (version February 2026). They say the card remains the Sparkasse's property, and a sticker that peels off without residue leaves the card unchanged. To be completely sure, read your own Sparkasse's terms or ask your branch.

Will an ATM keep my card because of the sticker?

The terms list good cause for termination, security reasons or suspected misuse as reasons to retain a card. Stickers are not on that list. Still, check that no edge is lifting before you put the card into a machine.

Does my girocard still work contactless with a sticker?

Yes. The antenna is inside the card and thin printed vinyl does not block it. The chip window keeps the chip uncovered.

Can I take the sticker off again?

Yes. Lift one corner with your fingernail and peel slowly. It comes off without residue and without damaging your card.

Do you need my card or card details?

No, never. You only upload a photo. A real person checks every photo before printing and gets in touch if the crop or quality is off. Anything else? See Contact and FAQs.
