Card safety
Are Credit Card Stickers Safe?
Short answer: yes. The chip stays uncovered, tap to pay and ATMs keep working, and the sticker peels off without residue. Here is what matters for your card and your bank.
A card sticker, sometimes called a card skin or card cover, is a thin layer of printed vinyl on the front of your credit or debit card. Here is what it changes about your card, and what it does not.
What still works with a sticker on your card
| Feature | With a Pettypurse sticker |
|---|---|
| Chip payments | Work. The chip window is cut out, so the terminal reaches the chip directly. |
| Tap to pay | Works. The antenna sits inside the card, and thin printed vinyl does not block the signal. |
| ATMs | Work. The sticker is thin and cut to the standard card size. |
| Magnetic stripe | Untouched. It is on the back, and the sticker only covers the front. |
| Apple Pay and Google Pay | Unaffected. They do not use the physical card at all. |
Does a sticker block the chip?
A payment terminal reads the chip through small metal contacts that touch it, so nothing should ever cover the chip itself. That is why every Pettypurse sticker has the chip window cut out. Line it up with your chip when you put the sticker on, and the chip stays completely exposed.
Does contactless still work?
The antenna for tap to pay is a coil of wire sealed inside the plastic of your card, not on its surface. A thin printed vinyl sticker on top does not stop the signal. What can interfere with contactless is metal, such as aluminium foil, and a vinyl sticker is not metal.
Can I still use my card at an ATM?
Yes. Bank cards are made to one international standard size and thickness, and a thin sticker cut exactly to that size fits the card slot. What can catch in a motorised card reader is a lifted edge, so if a corner ever starts to peel after long use, press it back down or replace the sticker.
When an ATM keeps a card, it is almost always for a different reason: the card was not taken back in time, the PIN was entered wrongly too often, or the bank has blocked the card.
Am I allowed to put a sticker on my credit card?
We know of no Visa or Mastercard rule against stickers that cardholders put on their own cards. Many banks do state in their terms that the card remains the bank's property. That is exactly why a removable sticker is the sensible way to make your card your own: it peels off without residue and leaves the card underneath unchanged. If you want to be completely sure, look at the card terms of your bank. For German banks, see our guide on stickers on Sparkasse cards and girocards; for Revolut, Monzo and N26 we have Revolut, Monzo and N26 pages.
Good to know: some banks also sell cards with your own photo printed on them. That usually means ordering a new card. A sticker works on the card you already have, and you can change the design whenever you like.
Will shops accept my card?
Almost every payment today is by tap or chip, where nobody handles or inspects your card. At a staffed till the sticker covers the front design of the card, including the Visa or Mastercard logo if it is printed on the front. It rarely comes up, but if a cashier wants to check the card, the back of the card is unchanged.
Does a sticker damage the card?
No. The sticker peels off without residue, and the card, the chip and the magnetic stripe stay exactly as they were. With normal daily use a sticker lasts one to two years, and you can swap in a new design at any time.
Keep your card details safe
- We never need your card. You upload a photo, we send you the sticker, and you put it on yourself. Never post your card to anyone who offers to personalise it.
- Note your card number first. If your number is printed on the front, take a photo of both sides before you apply the sticker and keep it somewhere private, such as a locked photo album.
- Cover the front only. Leave the magnetic stripe and the signature strip on the back uncovered.
Questions about card safety
Can a card sticker cause my payment to be declined?
A payment is approved or declined by your bank based on your account, not on how the card looks. As long as the chip window lines up with the chip, card payments work as before.
